Tens of thousands of people face a second disaster this evening as they struggled to survive in the ravaged island of Haiti.

Without food, without water or shelter, aid agencies were in a desperate race against time to save earthquake victims.

Witnesses described the blood running channels and children sleeping among piles of corpses after being separated from their parents.
