Commonly known as Flying fish, scientifically known as Exocoetidae has more than 40 known species, grouped in 7 to 9 genera (families). Flying fish are commonly found in the world of tropical and subtropical oceans, where temperatures are entitled to thrive.
Flying fish have a very unique defense mechanism to escape predators. They found that the best way to avoid other fish in the water is out of the water.

Beautiful pictures. Just one correction: The fish held by the little boy is not a flying fish but a “flying gurnard” – a clumsy, bottom-dwelling armored fish which apparently uses its enlarged fins to scare off potential predators (another part of the pectoral fin is used to comb the sand for food) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_gurnard
