Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the tissue linings of your body’s internal organs. The name comes from the main tissue affected, which is known as mesothelium responsible for producing a special fluid to enable movement of the organs. Among the organs that mesothelium protects include the stomach, lungs, and heart. Therefore, most cases of mesothelioma begin at any one of these organs. The extent of the tumor though can either be benign or cancerous.
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer; however it is becoming more prevalent in recent times. Averages of a little over 2,000 people are diagnosed with this type of cancer annually. But statistics show that this type of cancer affects men more than women. The reason for this data is traced to the cause of this type of cancer, which has to do with the type of work that many men do.
